With her debut EP "If the Vibe's Right" dropping on August 1, 2025, Cherriene is poised to make a lasting impression on the music industry. In this interview, we'll dive into the inspiration behind "Slow Dance", her creative process, and what fans can expect from her upcoming EP. Plus, learn more about her music community, Rienedrops, and how she's building a loyal following of fans who appreciate her unique sound.
Q: What inspired you to create "Slow Dance," and what do you hope listeners take away from this song? How does it set the tone for your debut EP "If the Vibes Right"?
CHERRIENE: I grew up in a time when people weren’t afraid to dance. Like really dance, at parties and clubs. Nowadays, it feels like everyone’s just standing around, barely reacting, even when the DJ’s killing it. When I heard the beat for ‘Slow Dance,’ I knew I wanted to create something that would get people moving again. Something that brings back that energy where it was cool to take up space on the dance floor. Since it’s the first track on the EP, I wanted it to set the tone and give a clear nod to that late ’90s and early 2000s vibe that inspired it.
Q: Your music gives an old-school soul with a modern twist. Can you tell us more about your artistic vision and how you aim to blend different styles and genres in your music?
CHERRIENE: I’ve always loved the honesty and emotion in old-school soul, but I also grew up with modern sounds. Blending the two just feels natural. I try to make music that feels timeless, something soulful but fresh, where live elements meet modern production. It’s really about honoring the past while finding my own lane in the present.
Q: Your EP "If the Vibes Right" features a range of emotive and introspective tracks. Can you walk us through your songwriting process, and how do you draw inspiration from your personal experiences and emotions?
CHERRIENE: My songwriting process is sporadic. I could be sleeping and hear a melody or words in my dream and will wake up just to record it in my notes app so I won't forget. Or I could be in the zone and knock out the first half of the song in 10 minutes. The songs I write are usually songs that I would want to hear or things said to me from a lover.
Q: You've built a music community called Rienedrops, which is clearly important to you. Can you tell us more about this community, and how do you see it evolving in the future?
CHERRIENE: The Raindrops are my family! They have been there right beside me through everything. I can always count on them to show up and support whatever I do. I need their feedback most of all. These are my core listeners, and they deserve to be heard as well. As it grows, I’d love to expand it into something even more interactive — maybe more live experiences, behind-the-scenes moments, or creative spaces where we can collaborate and build together.
Q: Your debut EP "If the Vibes Right" features five tracks, each with its own unique vibe and theme. Can you tell us more about the story behind each track, and how they fit together to create a cohesive EP?
CHERRIENE: Sure!
"Slow Dance”- is a fun, smooth track made to get you and your lover up and moving.
“Journal Entry”- was written in honor of my late best friend. Being a Black man in today’s world comes with so many unseen struggles, and I wanted to create something every Black man needs to hear. I was that listening ear for my friend, and I hope this song lets someone out there know they’re not alone and someone does care.
“Heat”- was such a blast to record. I’ve always loved those music video moments where the guy sees the girl across the room and sings like she’s the only one in the world, so I made my own version of that fantasy.
“Slow Burn”- is exactly what it sounds like: a warning. Take all of me in too fast, and you just might get burned.
“Fever”- That’s one of those candle-lit dinner, dress-down-later kind of songs. A soundtrack for the wild nights. Each song on the project has its own mood and story, but what ties everything together is the emotional honesty. Sonically, it flows like a journal: smooth, soulful, and intimate. Even though the topics vary, they all come from the same heart and voice. That’s what makes it feel whole.
Q: With your debut EP dropping on August 1, 2025, what's next for you as an artist? Are there any exciting projects or collaborations in the works, and how do you see your music evolving in the future?
CHERRIENE: My team and I have been working on the brand. I'm in grind mode. I don't want to be an artist who pops out every 5 years with nothing in between to hold the audience. I have a few features coming up that I'm pretty excited about, so stay tuned. I would love to collaborate with my inspirations and also new indie artists like myself. I think my music will keep growing with me. As I go through different experiences and phases in life, that naturally shows up in my sound and my writing. I want to try new things, blend genres, and just keep pushing myself creatively while still keeping it real and staying true to who I am. It’s really about evolving without losing the core of what makes my music feel honest.
