Plus, we'll be speaking with T'era Lenae herself about the inspiration behind the album and what drives her creative process.
Q: Hi T'era, it's great to have you join Divine Xperience Agency for this interview. What inspired you to create "The Heart Chakra," and what's the story behind the album's title?
T'ERA: What inspired me to create this album was that I was coming out of a place of making music on heartbreak because that’s what I was still healing from, and I didn’t want to keep making that kind of music, putting that energy out for people to listen to or sing. I feel like music holds the same energy as affirmations. When you say an affirmation, you hone in on that energy. Same with music, you sing a song, you feel it, you play it on repeat, and hone in on that energy which can eventually lead to things manifesting into your reality.
So I wanted to be mindful of the music I was putting out there. I’m a lovebird, I want to be in love, I plan on being someone's wife, so instead of talking about it in a way coming from hurt, I wanted it to come from a place of either being in love, wanting to experience that kind of love, or resolution if things do arise in your relationship. As far as the title, the heart chakra is a chakra for the heart located at the center of your chest.
The color of it is green. Now when this chakra is out of balance, it causes a blockage for love, making you more closed off, etc. So because I’m coming from a healing place, meaning a balanced heart chakra, open and ready to receive and give love, I felt like that was the perfect title for it.
Q: Your lyrics are often described as therapeutic and soothing – can you tell us more about your approach to songwriting and how you aim to connect with your listeners?
T'ERA: I like to tell stories through my music, so when I’m writing, I want the person listening to not only be able to feel it but see it. I’ll just think of a topic, whether love or personal, and create the story from there. Now with this specific project, it was for women but mainly for the men. We have a lot of toxic music out there, especially coming from women, I feel like putting men down, or singing about heartbreak, not really uplifting.
That’s not where I am in my life, and I feel like even if you are, you shouldn’t be listening to low vibrational music like that. So back to the men, I wanted them to feel like they’re deserving just as much as women, but also in a way that caters to my women audience as well. I was hoping overall for each side to feel the same way as in this is the love I wanna receive/give because I’m worthy of that.
Q: The album's production is notable for its lush instrumentation and subtle nuances – can you tell us more about your creative process and how you work with your producers and collaborators?
T'ERA: So as of right now, the producer I use, I found him through YouTube. I eventually want to work in person and create things, but I find beats that he’s already made that fit my style. The majority of his beats fit me already. I started off just doing R&B, and it just didn’t feel like me. It was nice making it, but it still felt like something was missing. So I went back to the music I grew up on, like Musiq Soulchild, Vivian Green, Lauryn Hill, Amerie, Teena Marie, on top of all the others: Michael Jackson, Joe, Avant, Donell Jones, Jaheim, Aaliyah, Mary J, and the list goes on.
There was something about the Neo-soul that called to my soul more, from the storytelling to the way the instruments flow through the beats. Since I was a baby, I’ve always listened very closely to the beats and the different instruments, and how they made me feel. When I went back to that, I realized that’s the music I want to make and based my beat picking off of that, and went from there. My engineer, when mixing, brings out the instruments more for the finished product that everyone else hears. The goal is to eventually have the producer I use to where we can meet up and create on that level. I haven’t gotten a chance to experience that yet.
The writing process is all over; I can be about to step in the shower and lyrics pop in my head, and I have to hurry and run to my phone so I don’t forget the melody, or just listen to the beat and the beat speaks to me and tells me what to say. So it just depends on the moment, what’s around me, or what I’m doing that will trigger it.
Q: Can you walk us through some of the themes and emotions that are explored on the album?
T'ERA: I have themes on finding love while still trying to heal certain wounds that you didn’t even know you still had, but you also never experienced someone to love you correctly. Like my song "Safeplace," it touches on having someone amazing in your life, and because this is new and you’ve never had it, you're waiting for the bad or may start self-sabotaging, but the person loves you so much they gently help you through that, and you recognize that, and because you don’t want to mess it up, you yourself work on fixing it, while still showing your appreciation to your partner. A lot of people will get triggered and pull away, don’t want to fix it, and I didn’t want to tell the story that way. Or like my song "Beautiful," letting a man know how beautiful he is, that I see them, women see them. It’s okay to cry, it’s okay to be vulnerable, and so on and so forth.
All the way down to "January 1st," talking about a fresh start, a new year, and how you want to make it your best year, taking the lessons you’ve learned and going forward moving differently, rising above all, gas to the pedal, while loving and pouring into yourself. Or "Get Mine," working so hard and never having time for a break, but, where you’re in life right now, it’s no time for that, but you still wish you could. Even though you feel that way, you just keep grinding because you have dreams you’re trying to accomplish. That song is like I’m venting. So yeah, just touching all the different feelings, love, healing, plus having to work, and dealing with all that at once.
Q: Your music often blends elements of neo-soul, R&B, and soul – can you tell us more about your musical influences and how you approach genre in your work? Also what do you hope listeners take away from "The Heart Chakra," and how do you see the album impacting your audience?
T'ERA: My musical influences are Amerie, Aaliyah, Jhene Aiko, Tina Marie, Lauryn Hill, Michael Jackson, and so many more, but I feel like all these artists brought something to music. They weren’t afraid to be as creative as possible, which I think is important as an artist—standing out and making the music your own, like Prince as well, James Brown, Luther Vandross, and the way their music could connect with people. So when I approach it, that’s also what I want to bring: making the music, but making it my own, building that connection to my supporters in a way they feel me, and may say I remind them of someone but not in a copying way. Not a fan of copying anyone’s work.
I hope when my audience listens to my music, especially this album, it makes them feel good as a whole, and also makes people believe in love again. I want the impact to be that when they want to listen to someone, they think of my music, because the energy and frequency make them feel seen and understood. For it to take them to a place in their mind where they can move in a way of love, resolution, and strength. Hearing my words, knowing they’re worthy of being loved and poured into, and making them not want to accept anything less from anyone.
Q: Lets privet you also have your latest single " No Disguise" which had an amazing visual by way. What was your creative process behind this song?
T'ERA: I heard the beat first, and the first line "eyes and lips that tell the truth" was the first line that popped up in my head. I sang it into my phone so I wouldn’t forget, and then I actually ended up coming back to the song probably a week later. I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to take the song. So after sitting on it, I’m like, okay, I want to come from a place of two people being able to be themselves, no mask, no costume, because there’s no judgment, so they don’t have to hide any parts of themselves.
As far as the visual, I wanted it to be as intimate as possible. No flashy clothes or jewelry, no extra lighting or huge camera crew, just me, my makeup artist, my mom, my lead man, my cameraman, and his one camera. I wanted the video to feel how the videos back in the day felt, more relatable.

Q: Any last words or advice you would like to give to your listeners?
T'ERA: Keep God first. Don’t focus on what it looks like right now but focus on where you’re going. Life comes with challenges and lessons, but it’s all about what you do with them, and remember whatever you may be going through, it’s always someone going through worse. So never forget to be thankful for what you do have because you’re so worried about what you don’t. Never give up on yourself even if nobody else believes in what you’re trying to do, because it’s not their dream, it’s yours, so they’re not going to see it the way you do, so make a believer out of them.
Lastly, know that you’re worthy, and there ain’t no dream too big, the sky is not the limit, yes I said that right, people say the sky is the limit, but I’m telling you it’s not, you can go as high as you wanna go, but make sure you remain humble, kind, and don’t forget God when you get to where you wanna be.
