With a string of impressive covers and a devoted following across all platforms, Kali Sade is an artist on the rise. Today, we're excited to dive into her latest single, "Do Better," and explore the inspiration and creativity behind this talented artist.
Q: What inspired your new single, "Do Better"? Is there a personal story or experience that you drew from?
KALI: When I wrote Do Better, at that time in my life, I felt I could be doing way better than I was doing. Plus, there were so many people around me who were supporting me, and at that time, I felt I was letting them down. Also, I felt I was letting myself down, and it was a full-circle moment with all the other things I was dealing with, like being in a toxic relationship and having a lot on my plate. So I had to look deep within to inspire, love, and appreciate myself for who I am, which motivated me to strive to start doing better.
Q: Could you share a little about your background and how your journey in music began? What have been some of the most significant challenges you've encountered as an independent artist, and what strategies have you used to overcome them?
KALI: Growing up, my grandfather was a singer, and he would make my siblings, cousins, and myself sing all the time. My grandfather was in a group in the 70's and 80's, and he really wanted one of us to make it as a singer. He would make us sing at home, at church, and at family functions. Also, my dad introduced me to all types of music, and I really started to gravitate toward music. Therefore, I started practicing singing songs by artists like Chaka Khan and SWV. Also, I was inspired by hip hop and was influenced by Lauryn Hill and 2Pac, and I eventually started rapping in my early teen years. However, I eventually started back singing, and I officially wrote my first song "All In" when I was 14, and recorded it at 15. As I continued growing up, writing and performing songs became my therapy.
The significant challenges I encounter as an independent artist are having to make content. Making content is difficult because I am a very shy and private person, and it is also challenging to come up with ideas on what to post on social media. Also, funding can be a challenge because the music industry can be expensive.
Q: What can fans anticipate from "Do Better" regarding its sound and message? Do you envision your music evolving in the future, and what themes or subjects do you aspire to delve into?
KALI: The sound and music come from one of my go-to producers, Nos Beats. The message is about having an intimate, deep talk within yourself. The song was my personal story; however, it has touched and inspired others to love themselves enough to start making the necessary changes to do better. I can envision my music evolving in the future.
I am a Gemini, and I make music addressing many different issues, based on what I am experiencing at that time. Being a young artist, my music will evolve as I evolve as a person. Therefore, whatever experiences life brings me, I will write and record in a song and share it with my audience.
Q: In what ways do you believe music serves as a potent tool for healing and empowerment, and what impact do you aspire for your music to have on your audience?
KALI: I believe music is important for healing and empowerment because of the feeling you get when listening. Regardless of the type of song, you are going to feel it in some type of way. Sometimes life can hit you so hard, and we can forget how to feel; however, when you listen to music, it helps bring those feelings and emotions back, which is a beautiful thing. Music can also encourage people; for example, a listener said Do Better “got them through a trying time.” Therefore, music can be a form of therapy.
As an artist, I want my music to be impactful and influential. I want my music to inspire people to be who they want to be, as long as they are true to themselves and authentic. Being a true Gemini, my audience will get a variety of topics in my music.
Q: You've gained a significant following across all platforms. What do you think sets you apart from other emerging artists, and how do you engage with your audience?
KALI: I think what sets me apart from other artists is that my audience has grown with me over the last five years, from when I dropped my first single at 15 in 2020, until dropping "Do Better" in 2025. Also, I am a songwriter who wrote or co-wrote the lyrics to all of my songs. Additionally, I am different because, as an artist, I am authentically myself and I am not ashamed of who I am as a person or an artist. Therefore, my fans have connected with me because of my authenticity. Furthermore, I always try to respond to my fans' messages and comments because it is important to show my appreciation and to let my supporters know I see and appreciate their support.
.
Q: Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you're excited about?
KALI: My next single NGL is dropping on April 10th, and I am very excited about this song.
Also, I will drop around three more singles before the end of this year. As far as full projects, I plan on dropping an EP or maybe an album in 2026. While I do not have any official collaborations scheduled to release soon, I am attending studio sessions with a few other artists, so maybe we will surprise our audience in the near future.
